I’m a big believer in using the comment section in (some serious) online media. I’ve been neglecting this blog, but I have been writing furiously, mostly about Palestine. Here’s a bunch, newest to oldest. They were all published unless noted.
Aug 3 – Comment to the “Mike” in the New York Times who defended the IDF mission to eliminate tunnels and who thought the idea of proportionality and limits in war was bogus.
No Mike, Israel is not trying to eliminate rockets, tunnels or whatever flavor of the day Zionist propaganda serves up for you. They want to eliminate Palestinians from the land. Witness blogger Jochanan Gordon piece “When Genocide is Permissible” that he thought was a reasonable item for discussion and posted it on the sites “The Times of Israel” and the greater Long Island site “5 Towns Jewish Times”. “Death to the Arabs” has long been a chant at Israeli soccer games and it’s now mainstream for Jewish mobs in Israel. Fascism, Israeli style, rules aided by the every loving U.S. empire which loves/fears its client state run amok. See this article.
July 29. Comment to a New York Times commenter who was expressing some sympathy for “the people” in Gaza who were supposedly being victimized by Hamas tunnel builders
Of course it is the “people” who build the tunnels. Read about the Vietnamese tunnels
The Post writer says, “The tunnels are also a powerful universal testament to the strength of the human will against overwhelming odds.” Now we say that after killing 3 milliion Vietnamese because, because ?????? Remember how the Vietnamese were vilified with every racist term and described as a people who didn’t mind it when family members were killed just like the Israeli PM says that Palestinians want “telegenic” dead. On “Democracy Now” yesterday they quoted a Palestinian man who demanded that Hamas not just agree to a ceasefire. He lived in a neighborhood of 100,000 that had just been turned to rubble and was DEMANDING that something be accomplished for their sacrifice. The tired old trope that the Palestinian people are victims of a few (communists, PLO, Hamas, etc etc) is nonsense.
A comment under Adam Hochschild’s fine op-ed about World War I which explained how generals thought their easy experiences in colonial wars should guide them in the Great War
A modern example might be Libya. Looking back at the U.S. “victory” in Kosovo with no U.S. casualties, Obama and Ms. Clinton thought they could do the same in Libya. As Clinton giggled, “We came, we saw, he died”. Yet, surprise, it does not seem to have turned out so well. The dictator’s weapons are spread now from Syria to Mali. Libya itself has dissolved into violent chaos. Our diplomatic staff and their Marine guards have been forced to…flee.
Comment in Mondoweiss about using the term “genocide” with regard to Gaza
I’ve always been reluctant to use the word “genocide” with regard to Palestine. It seemed a wild exaggeration that would discredit us. And then what word do we use when the next Israeli government campaign is even worse? But now when the borders are all closed, shelling is indiscriminate, everything is a target, racist mobs run free to cheer the killing…what other word can describe what the IDF is doing? I think a confusion in my own mind is thinking “genocide” means the intent to kill ALL of a people like the Nazis wanted to do with the Jews. But a simple google search for “genocide definitions” gives: “the deliberate killing of a large group of people, especially those of a particular ethnic group or nation.” A thousand is a large group, ergo…
Comment in the New Haven Register about a front page article about some people from a Madison, CT (Reform) synagogue who had just come back from a July trip to Israel.
“This gave me a chance to witness a society whose very existence, whose existential existence is being challenged,” said Selectman Al Goldberg, a founding director of the synagogue. “This is a place that looks like home in a way, and yet, these folks are under an existential threat.”
The old propaganda trope used four times in two sentences. Who is threatening this? Jordan which has a peace treaty with Israel? Egypt which has a peace treaty? Syria which is in ruins? Saudi Arabia which is a de facto ally of Israel? Iran which is far away and never made a nuclear bomb? the PLO which via the Palestine Authority doesn’t even authorize a protest? Hamas which is behind the walls of Gaza? Yes, its rockets may kill some Israelis, but “Israel’s existence”??? Give me a break.
Could the members of the congregation explain why they admire this country so much despite the fact that their rabbi could not marry two Jews in that country. Only Orthodox rabbis can do that. Name any country beside Saudi Arabia where a Reform rabbi can’t marry two Jews?
To the Connecticut Post
What a shame to see the Obama administration give blank check support to Israel for what amounts to war crimes, 60 killed today by shelling in the Shajayia massacre, 4 kids killed on the Gaza beach a couple days ago, 18 in one family dead because their father was a police chief, al-Wafa hospital destroyed and on and on. Helpless American citizen Tarek abu Khdeir badly beaten by masked Israeli soldiers. Even though it was caught on video weeks later no soldier has been arrested.
Comment on a New York Times editorial
The title of the editorial should be “Israel’s July Rampage” and the NYT should call for the resignation of the entire U.S. Senate which has just given a “green light” for Netanyahu to continue his barbarities and which is debating how many hundreds of billions of dollars more it should give the Israeli military. The level of cowardice (and avarice) before the Israel Lobby has reached new heights. However unwise (or criminal) the Hamas rockets their actions pale before the IDF which effectively have been killing Palestinians nearly every day since the withdrawal of settlers in 2005. Last year the Palestine Authority (which is armed and under the guidance of the CIA) noted that a Palestinian child had been killed by Israelis every three days for thirteen years!! For more see http://www.TheStruggle.org Can I point out that the ever increasing gifts to the soldiers of Israeli Apartheid take place when tens of thousands in Detroit are losing running water?
Letter to the New York Times – July 19- (not published)
The title of the editorial should be “Israel’s July Rampage” and the NYT should call for the resignation of the entire U.S. Senate which has just unanimously given a “green light” for Netanyahu to continue his barbarities and which is debating how many hundreds of millions of dollars more it should give the Israeli military. To the New York Times
Remember our contribution to the killing of the 200 Palestinians and injuries to a thousand more (some gruesome injuries), billions in money and weapons and total protection at the Security Council. Now our senators want to pass a resolution to “green light” Netanyahu’s war crimes http://www.thestruggle.org/loathsome%20senate%20bill%20support%20netanyahu%20july%202015.htm thus ensuring them favors from the Israel Lobby. Reject the Zionist cult fattened by the billionaires and listen to Jewish Voice for Peace instead.
The New York Times commented that Netanyahu didn’t seem to care about U.S. criticism.
Cut all aid to Israel right now and see if Mr. N is so cavalier. In Detroit they’re shutting off the water to thousands who can’t pay bills, schools are closing in Chicago and Philly, the homeless in New Haven have no place they can go and we keep shoveling the money to Israeli apartheid. Read Max Blumenthal or Robert Naiman or JJ Goldberg. Netanyahu knew that the three Israelis were murdered almost immediately, but he cynically kept the #BringOurBoysHome campaign going to whip up hysteria and to divert attention from the collapsed “peace process”. That President Obama’s Administration supports the mass killing of Palestinians is beyond shame.
Comment to the Tampa Bay Times about a comment by a “Jack Stoner” who thought the beating of Tarek was “sad”. Tarek Abu Kader in an American citizen who lives in Tampa.
Jack Stoner, don’t dismiss what was done to this young man (and U.S. citizen) as “sad”. Look at the video and watch him being beaten and stomped. http://youtu.be/HDENWwEDGr4 We expect the U.S. government to do a little more than say it’s “disturbed” at the picture. It should insist that the soldiers be found out (they are masked to prevent identification) and prosecuted. The U.S. has a history of turning it back on Americans who are attacked by Israelis, from the 34 sailors who died on the USS Liberty, to Rachel Corrie in 2003. … As for Pinardi you’re wrong in saying this was all set off by the “Palestine’s kidnapping and killing 3 teens”. Without excusing those murders in the least, realize that a Palestinian youth or child has been killed by an Israeli every three days for thirteen years. (Source PA Ministry Ramallah June 4, 2013) Recall in mid-May security cameras showed two Palestinians being picket off by sniper. Israel is still “investigating”
Comment about the “investigation” by Israel into the sniping deaths of two Palestinian youths near Ofer prison (uncertain to which newspaper I posted this)
Jerusalem is full of security cameras. How long does it take for Israeli police to look at the videos? Palestinians alerted police immediately after the abduction. Will soldiers question Israeli Jews like they interrogate Palestinians? Will they knock down Israeli doors and ransack homes and confiscate computers? Will they put Israeli Jews under curfews? Will they arrest hundreds of suspects from the vigilante groups? Will they blow up the houses of the suspects as they do to Palestinians?…Plus it should be known that the American cousin of the youth who was lynched was beaten near to death and is being held in an Israeli jail. There is video of the beating that has gone viral. He’s 15. His name is Tariq Abukhdeir and he’s from Florida. For some reason the President and State Department have made no comment even though President Obama did correctly condemn the murder of the three Israeli youths.
